Journey Back in Time: Espolon Crossing

A four-day Patagonia sea kayaking and trekking trip to places rarely visited by outsiders. Come explore the real Patagonia, one of oil lamps, horseback transport and remote settlements. Bring home a perspective on life few will ever know. Truly, this trip is priceless.

Day 1: Arrival and Introductions
Arrive at either of our entry points in Puerto Montt, Chile or Esquel, Argentina, the gateway to Patagonia. Connect with our representative and travel to the remote riverside town of Futaleufu, surrounded by majestic mountains. You will find your accommodations at our comfortable inn and town cabins, and unwind from your trip with a hearty welcome dinner at the Futaleufu Adventure Center

Day 2: Your choice of Adventure Activities
After breakfast you choose from one our Adventure Center activities by either joining a rafting trip, horseback riding excursion, mountain biking trip or a day trek near town. Later, we will help you prepare your Chile sea kayaking adventure. Before the sun sets we will arrange , gear, food, and go over logistics of our sea kayak journey.

Day 3: Sea Kayaking - Crossing the Espolon
You depart early to Lago Espolon, in time to catch the early morning sounds and sights. You will put-in on the emerald green lake and sea kayak across its glassy waters, stopping for lunch at a beautiful waterfall and swimming hole, separated from civilization by virgin forests and Lago Espolon. As you seak kayak to the far side of the lake, approximately a three-hour journey you will be surrounded by massive mountains and endless blue sky. At the far side, you will beach your sea kayak where horses will be waiting to take you and your gear to our bed and breakfast in the town of Espolon. Outside the stars of the Southern Cross will be keeping watch as you turn off the oil lamps and go to sleep. You just might feel like you’ve been in a time machine and were transported 200 years back. Sea Kayaking in Patagonia doesn't get any better than this!

Day 4: Trekking - Upper Espolon Valley
You awake in your remote bed and breakfast to the warm hospitality of our Chilean hosts. After breakfast, you will pack your lunch for a full day of trekking in the remote alpine valley, which only a few outsiders have ever visited.

Day 5: Sea Kayaking - Crossing the Espolon Back
In the morning you are welcome to go for a half-day hike or just relax in the comforts of the Bed and Breakfast. Around midday you return to your sea kayaks and you paddle back to the other side of Espolon Lake. After reaching the other side you will have an opportunity to stretch your legs and take a short hike to the headwaters of the Rio Espolon where you can see the incredible Espolon waterfalls. At 5:00 pm, the Expediciones Chile vehicle will pick you up at a small outpost to take you back to the Futaleufu Adventure Center for dinner and the last night celebration of your Chile sea kayaking vacation.

Day 6: Departure
Wake up for an early breakfast and drive back to Chaiten, Chile and your flight to Puerto Montt, or relax for a couple of hours and take our shuttle to Esquel, Argentina. As you catch a final view of the Río Futaleufu; surrounded by hanging glaciers and snow capped mountains, take a moment to reflect upon all of the amazing sights and experiences of this past week. After all these years we are still stunned that views like these exist.

Included: All local transportation, shuttles, food and lodging while in Futaleufu. Round trip transportation between Futaleufu and Chaiten or Esquel. All sea kayaks and Patagonia sea kayak equipment specified in the packing list. The cost of finding alternate activities for the week should your Chile sea kayaking trip be prematurely terminated.
