This
year Expediciones Chile, an American owned company
running supported kayak trips on Chile’s
famous Futaleufu River, is offering season passes
from January thru March. A season kayaking pass
from Expediciones Chile guarantees a paddler a
steep discount for four weeks of kayaking from
the Expediciones Chile kayak eco-camp at the confluence
of the Azul and Futaleufu rivers, considered the
Crown Jewel of Big water rivers in the world.
Chris Spelius, Expediciones Chile founder hatched
the idea while skiing in Sun Valley, Idaho. “It
was a weekday, and I noticed I was one of the
few skier’s on the slopes without a season
pass,” said Spelius. “I thought the
idea might also work in Chile, for paddlers who
had the time to take a month off, but I wasn’t
sure. We were surprised that the idea was popular
and the response so great.”
Spelius runs kayak trips from his spectacular
Tres-Monjas eco-camp; that former guests have
declared the location a combination of Yosemite
and Glacier National parks. Spelius first paddled
the Futaleufu in 1985 and was so impressed he
made Chile his home for six months of the year.
Chris’s camp is designed specifically for
paddlers, offering a white sand beach, play wave,
sauna, dining lodge, a class 3 run, a big water
play run, and a challenging class 4/5 section.
