Employee Transportation to Futaleufu

Expediciones Chile and Futaleufu River Overview:

Expediciones Chile was founded in 1985 by Olympic kayaker Chris Spelius. The company was one of the first commercial outfitters on the Futaleufu. The Futaleufu is one of the most challenging commercially run rivers in the world. It is located in the remote region of Patagonia, Chile. The Expediciones Chile season is from November 15th to April 15th. The office and employee housing are located in the rural town of Futaleufu, Chile. The Espolon river is at the edge of the town and flows into the nearby Futaleufu. The Espolon put-in is 4 blocks from our office and the employee house. Our Eco-Camp Tres Monjas and CondorNest ranch are 21 kilometers 30 minutes downstream at the confluence of the Rio Azul and Futaelufu.

The tourist season in Futaleufu can be hectic. The staff is very busy assisting, leading and entertaining clients. There are few opportunities to take time off. During lower traffic periods, employees may be asked to perform tasks unrelated to those defined by their positions. The Expediciones Chile clientele arrive to Patagonia from all parts of the world and expect the trip of a lifetime. It is the duty of the staff to make this dream come true. It must be understood that the pressure of the job can get intense. All employees are expected to put the client first and be available to them at all times. Qualified applicants must also be personable individuals who are capable of intelligently conversing with the clients and must be able to give them an unforgettable experience.

Expediciones Chile is a multi-cultural company. It is expected that employees represent Expediciones Chile, the country of Chile, their home country, the river running community and respect the culture and laws of Chile. Approximately half of the staff is Chilean, and all prospective employees must be comfortable in a multi-cultural environment. Flexibility, teamwork, adaptability and an outstanding work ethic are absolutely essential. Those who elect to submit a job application to us should be sure that they are comfortable with this work environment. Please take time to review the website view our videos and slide shows.

All companies tend to reflect the values of the founder. See our River Philosophy. Though the river lifestyle has sometimes been know for its "partying ways", Expediciones Chile guides and staff do not participate in illegal drug use, or drunken blow outs. The staff is picked carefully to avoid that culture. We believe one can have great great times with the challenges of the natural environment, the natural high associated with exercise, the beauty of learning secrets to new skills, and the incredible beauty of Patagonia and its local culture. Our clients are incredibly successful, well educated and from diverse countries from all over the world. The dinner conversations are often profound, and the shared experiences are very bonding. Many of our clients stay in touch with us, and other trip members after their trip. We have families on some of our trips and we think we should make our clients proud to have their kids exposed to the young adults that comprise our staff. At times we have had a wrong guide fit and had to let guides go before the season is over. This is not pleasant for anyone so make sure you are ok with our culture.

There will  times to be on your own after work, however sometimes certain guides will be in charge of a group and will eat with them at camp or be an an extended trip with clients.  At these times a guide may be served wine with dinner. Other than that the company does not supply alcohol to employees.  Alcohol can be purchased when one is at the camp, but as one for the safety of the guests  it should be limited to a beer after the days activities.

Employee Transportation to Futaleufu:

Our first year employees are responsible to get to Futaleufu on their own. One can travel with a kayak on buses in Chile and Argentina.  Our travel page has maps and clear explanations on how to arrive in Futaleufu either through Chile or through Argentina. http://www.exchile.com/patagoniatravel.html The easiest way is through Buenos Aires, Argentina and flying or taking a bus to Esquel. Listed below are the most economical ways to travel to Futaleufu.

1. Fly to Buenos Aires and take a bus to Esquel. Take ground transport to Futaleufu http://www.exchile.com/LuxuryBusFutaleufu.html

2. Fly to Santiago and take a bus to Osorno and another bus through Argentina direct to Futaleufu. http://www.exchile.com/BusOsorno.html

3. The cheapest way! But Complicated. The ultra low fare carrier of Spirit http://www.spirit.com/Default.aspx has flights from many US cities to Lima, Peru. For example: Flying on Nov 19, 2011 one way Miami to Lima is $254.30 usd. They only allow one checked bag at 40 lbs to Lima, Peru. From Lima, Peru there are also cheap flights to Santiago on Sky airlines http://www.skyairline.cl/en/index.aspx. From Santiago there is bus transport to Osorno, and on to Futaleufu.
