Valley.

Whitewater Rafting on the Futaleufu
The Futaleufu River is located in northern
Patagonia, Chile. As a whitewater rafting
river it is relatively short, but extremely
intense and concentrated. From top to bottom
the whitewater section of the Futaleufu River is only 44 kilometers, or 27
miles long. It starts at the border of Argentina,
in Los Alerces National Park and ends in Patagonia,
Chile flowing into Lago Yelcho. The Futaleufu
River has four defined world class sections of varying difficulty.
The most challenging runs are on the Upper
Futaleufu and the introductory sections are
on the lower stretches. At Expediciones Chile
we always raft on the easiest sections of
the river first, to build your skills and
your team's confidence, before rafting the
more difficult sections. For this reason we
start on the Lower Futaleufu and then move
towards the top. You and your team can decide
to continue on to more difficult water, or
choose to continue rafting on the easier stretches.
And, if you think you’ve had enough
Futaleufu rafting there are numerous other
activities waiting for you in this spectacular
region of Patagonia, Chile. (The sections
available to raft also depend on the water
level of the Futaleufu.)

The Sections of the Futaleufu
(See
our Patagonia guidebook
for more general river details.)
Day 1 Las Escals Wild Mile: (15 miles 5.5 hours): Our first whitewater rafting run starts near the border with Argentina where we pick you up. A short dramatic drive along the Inferno gorge (that you may run later in the week) and we arrive at our put-in for the Las Escalas valley The Las Escalas valley is a remote introduction section of the Futaleufu, it is Class 3. It allows our guides to teach all you will need to know to prepare for downstream sections.. We walk two rapids and enter the Continuous Wild Mile Class 3-4 armed with the earlier practice. This continuous section ends in an explosive wave called "The Thing". We then enter a black wall granite gorge. The walls come down and the valley opens up to a remarkable scene. On our left The Tres Monjas peak towers overhead as the Las Cruces creek that drains its snow fields enter the Futaleufu. On the right the Rio Azul enters with a huge white sand beach on the shore. One of the most dramatic beaches on the river system. We take out at this beach just above another rapid that will lull you to sleep. This is where your RiverNest cabin and our eco camp Tres Monjas.
Day 2 Terminator and Bridge to Bridge: (10.9 miles 6 hours): In reality this day is two sections. It starts at our beach where the rafts are parked from the day before. We raft through some calm water and then enter the Class 4/5 Terminator section (6 miles, 3 hours) . This is a very challenging whitewater section that you will be ready for now after paddling the Wild Mile or other sections. The Terminator we will take a look at you and you will have an option to walk. This is followed up by Class 4 T2, Kyber pass and the straight down the middle Himalayas, perhaps the biggest waves in the hemisphere. Outrageous fun. We then have lunch and we will paddle into the the next section this same day. It is called bridge to bridge, a Class 4/4+ action-packed section (4.9 miles, 2.5 hours). This is world class Chile rafting at its best! Even our most experienced river runners tell us they have never seen such continuous non-stop action.
Day 3 The Earth of the Futaleufu: Bridge to Bridge plus Casa de Piedra: (9.4 miles, 5.5 hours): Another day of two sections. This day we will repeat the Bridge to Bridge (4.9 miles, 2.5 hours) plus enter a brand new section called the Class 5, Casa de Piedra section (4.5 miles, 2.5 hours) . Usually people enjoy Heart of the Futaleufu more the second time. Near the end of the run we give people the option of entering the Class 5 section of the Casa de Piedra. The most challenging section we have run yet. If everyone is game we paddle into Mas o Menos (Class IV+) and Casa de Piedra (Class V) rapids. If you are not comfortable, you can get out as a dirt road is nearby. The willing group members will continue on through Casa de Piedra. As we raft this section, those that have opted not to raft can watch and photograph from shore.
Day 4 Upper Futaleufu - Inferno, Las Escalas and Wild Mile: (19 miles, 8 hours) If water levels are ideal, the next rafting run is through the Class 5 Infierno Canyon (4 miles 3.5 hours). Then we paddle down the Las Escalas and the Wild Mile section (15 miles, 4.5 hours) with mandatory portages around the Zeta and Throne Room rapids. These are a sight to behold for experienced river runners. We finish with a repeat run of the Wild Mile and "The Thing". Our day of Patagonia rafting culminates at our riverside Tres Monjas Eco Camp at the confluence of the Azul and the Futaleufu. All the best that rafting in Patagonia has to offer! By the end of this day you will have run the entire whitewater stretch of the Futaleufu River!
