Horseback Riding in Chile:
Horseback Riding from the Lodge
Patagonia
Chile

From the village of Futaleufu, we take off on daily trips that allow you to live during the day in a time forgotten, but at night you can return to all the comforts of our Futaleufu Lodge.

At our lodge you can adjust the frequency and length of your riding to suit your own tastes. Our lodge based equestrian vacations are ideal for those individuals with limited experience on horseback and is also the perfect place to learn good riding technique. Our guides are always available to teach beginners and we can even schedule beginner week horseback riding vacations should you so desire.

The lodge also has plenty to offer the more experienced equestrian rider. From the comforts of our weather proof lodge you can set out each day to explore a new part of this incredible Patagonia countryside. All of our horseback rides vary in terrain and skill level. Those along the valley floor offer the opportunity to gallop and trot and those higher up in the Andes mountains will test your horsemanship and handling skills.

Futaleufu Lodge Riding Week

Day 1: Arrival & Introductions

Arrive at either of our entry points in Esquel, Argentina or Puerto Montt, Chile, the gateway cities to your Patagonia horseback riding adventure. Connect with our representative and travel to the remote riverside town of Futaleufu, surrounded by majestic mountains. You will find your accommodations at our comfortable native wood lodge, and unwind from your trip with a hearty welcome dinner at the Futaleufu Adventure Center.

Day 2: Orientation to Chilean Saddles, Tack and the Corralero Horse
Sleep in late and after breakfast we will walk you to our local ranch for an introduction to the art of horseback riding in Patagonia and the Chilean Corralero horse. We will also introduce you to the Chilean saddles and tack make sure all fits well and that your mount is suitable. Afterwards, we will head off for a half-day ride to Piedra de Aguila, a rock outcrop overlook. We will return to Futaleufu for a late snack and our traditional Pisco Sours.

Day 3: To the Devils Throat

We horseback ride up on a trail along the pristine Rio Espolon, crossing small wood bridges and passing sandy beaches, until we get to a tremendous Class VI waterfall exploding out of Lago Espolon into the valley below. This tempest is called “La Garganta del Diablo” and it is truly a sight to behold.

Day 4: Horseback Ride to the Rio Chico

This ride takes us upstream to a charming valley that is habitat for the endangered Huemul a small dear like animal that resembles the fictitious jackalope of the American intermountain west. We ride along fern draped cliffs, sprinkled by rivulets and lace-like waterfalls into the National Reserve of the Huemul.

Day 5: Escalas Valley Circuit
Today, our ride will take you along the Infierno Gorge, a black rock canyon of the Futaleufu River. Snow-capped peaks surround us as we view the agitated turquoise water 500 feet below. You can easily imagine the tectonic activity that formed this area 70 million years ago. The trail enters the open Las Escalas Valley. We will ride along the river and cross it on a wood and cable swinging bridge and ride through an old growth forest of Coigue trees up out of the valley and around a small lake back to the village of Futaleufu.

Day 6: Day Off

This is a day to enjoy the culture of the village and take a break from horseback riding in Chile. You can go shopping, trekking, fishing or visit the beaches on the Rio Espolon. If you are feeling up to it you can also take a raft trip down the mighty Futaleufu. This day is built in to the itinerary as a rest day from horseback riding.

Day 7: Ride to the Argentina Border
Bring your passports on this day. We are going to horseback ride to the border with Argentina. We will tie up our horses and go for a short trek into Argentina and their Parque Nacional de los Alerces. After today’s Patagonia horseback ride, we will have a special farewell fiesta and remember all the sights and adventures we had on our trip.

Day 8: Departure
Wake up for an early breakfast and drive back to Chaiten, Chile and your flight to Puerto Montt, or relax for a couple of hours and take our shuttle to Esquel, Argentina. As you catch a final view of the Río Futaleufu; surrounded by hanging glaciers and snow capped mountains, take a moment to reflect upon all of the amazing sights and experiences of this past week. After all these years we are still stunned that views like these exist.
