Chilean Saddles and Tack
Patagonia
Chile

At Expediciones Chile we believe in cultural immersion on all of our vacations especially in the area of equestrian culture. Here in Patagonia the economy and daily life of the Chileans in the valley still revolves around the horse. The saddles and tack that we use on our trail riding vacations are those styles currently used by locals.

Saddles

The Huasos and Arrieros
(Chilean cowboys) are used to spending long days in the saddle. When they are herding and driving cattle they can often find themselves outside for days at time. The saddles that have developed in this region of Patagonia reflect the needs of its rider. The saddle must offer the Huaso enough control of the horse over very steep and rugged terrain when herding cattle and also be comfortable enough to spend riding days at a time. Parts of the saddle may also serve as bedroll when out on the Huaso is out on the trail. Our saddles most closely resemble the American McClellan military type, most are metal framed. They are layered beneath with blankets that can serve as bedrolls and are covered with layers of sheepskin on top to afford the rider comfort; a perfect combination for this region of Patagonia. For less intensive rides the saddle may only be minimally covered with a layer of rawhide, or to suit an individual rider’s preference.

Stirrups

The traditional Huaso
stirrup was carved from wood to enclose and shield the foot; it shaped like a shoe in the interior. The design offered the Huaso’s feet excellent protection from the sides of the corrals that were used during the roundups. This type of design, that encloses the foot, is still the preferred design but it can be constructed of other materials other than wood. Today we find a mixture of stirrups types in this region of Patagonia, including the open style favored by American riders, although most Huasos and Chilean riders prefer the traditional stirrup. The stirrups are mounted more forward and higher on the saddle than the typical American trail riding saddle, which takes a little getting used to.

Bridles and Halters

The Patagonia bridle is a simple snaffle bit type arrangement with or without a noseband (depending on the animal and rider’s preference.) used for multi purpose trail riding. They are constructed of leather. The bits used also depend on the animal, purpose and rider preference. The most elaborately decorated bridles and halters are saved for special occasions like rodeos and parades.

Because our tack is different from that normally ridden in North America and Europe we will spend a significant amount of time learning about it and getting used to it. For experienced riders make the transition to Chilean tack does not take long. For less experienced riders Chilean style riding is as easy to learn as any other style.
