Charter Flights: Puerto Montt-Futaleufu route. These flights fly direct over the incredibly rugged Andes, in view of the active Chaiten volcano. This can be a spectacular experience. However these flight are not scheduled every day of the week. The airline company takes your reserve off the reserve form link on this page, and will attempt to schedule a shared charter flight, using the significant demand for this route on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Thus, we need to get your request for a reserve in as soon as possible. Once you have agreed to let exchile charge your credit card, we will then pay the Charter company. You will then be sent a voucher to confirm your flight.

Though more expensive and weather dependent than coming in through Argentina, This is a fast, and easy way to get to Futaleufu just minutes away from the village itself. However we only recommend this route when you are already committed to traveling in Chile before or after your exchile trip. You are allowed 15 kilos of luggage, if you are over you will have to you pay an extra luggage fee, and risk that all of your luggage may not make your flight. It usually does however. In the case of flight being suspended due to weather they will often divert to the coast near Chaiten. This flight is cheaper than a direct flight to Futaleufu. The cost difference will be refunded for the shorter flight, however we will apply the difference for getting a vehicle to drive you from the coast near Chaiten, to Futaleufu about 3.5 to 4 hours east. You will arrive in time for dinner. If bad weather happens on the return the airline company informs us and we apply the difference to get a vehicle to drive you down to the coast near Chaiten for a flight back to Puerto Montt. This is why you should not schedule flights departing Puerto Montt before 4 pm. Our office will work to solve these unplanned problems if you encounter them in route.

Plan to spend the night in Puerto Montt before your flight to Futaleufu. Upon arrival call the airline company and let them know your name, and ask them what time you should be at the smaller airport called Aerodroma La Poloma. (airport code SCPF) It is 10 minutes from the City Center of Puerto Montt. Taxi drivers know where it is. Make sure you are not going back to the jet airport, Tepual (airport code PMC). Upon arrival at this small airport there is a small office near the main hanger, let them know you have arrived. IF you are arriving in Puerto Montt, the morning of the charter flight departure, it is possible to make this exception by securing approval from our office in advance. If our office has approved this method it means the charter company has approved delaying the departure of the charter airplane for a reasonable time after your incoming flight has been scheduled to arrive. You will need to arrive on the first flight possible (around 8 am), claim you luggage, grab a taxi for the twenty five minute taxi ride to the La Poloma airport.

Shared Charter Prices:
Puerto Montt-Fualeufu each way: $100.000 pesos = approx $182.00 usd. 15 kilos of luggage
Puerto Montt-Chaiten each way: $50.000 pesos = approx $91.00 usd. (only scheduled in case of inclement weather)

Private Charter:
Puerto Montt -Futaleufu: $1800 usd 7 pax plane.

The night before your flight call our office for the confirmation of departure time the following morning.

Ferries:

Chaiten - Puerto Montt Route
Taking a ferry Puerto Montt Chaiten route is a scenic and a cultural immersion option. A new boat has joined the fleet call the Don Baldo complete with berths for the voyage between Puerto Montt and Chaiten (11 hours). Other ferries on this route are like landing craft and the the accommodations are tight and earthy. The schedule is available online and you can see which ferry is going the day you want to depart. Usually fridays and saturday from Chaiten to puerto montt coordinating with the end of our Andes to the Ocean trips. IF you like getting off the beaten path and enjoy seeing the real Chile including the evacuated city of Chaiten and the devastation that was caused by the 2008 eruption of the volcano this is a very interesting trip. It fits in with the end of the Andes to the Ocean trip by sea kayak and the Andes to the Ocean horseback trip. Take a look at the web page of the ferry you are interested in. If you want to activate this reserve our office will help.

Chaiten - Island of Chiloe Route
A few times a week there are ferries from Chaiten to Chiloe a 4 hour voyage. From Chiloe there are buses through the island and back to Puerto Montt. Not a bad way to see these islands if you have time. These are scheduled several times a week from Chaiten.

Puerto Montt- Puerto Natales Route (Gateway to Torres del Paine)
These are big ships that offer a very interesting way to get to the South of Patagonia. They are comfortable, but not luxury cruise ships. You can meet interesting people on this voyage, and the trip itself can be a fascinating cultural immersion experience. Not to mention the beauty of the fijords and the giant ice fields in the mountains, if the weather is cooperative.

Rental Car:
We realize that many travelers enjoy a rental car and feel secure to have their own vehicle. Yet, this is not recommended for traveling from point A to point B; there are more reliable methods. Roads are gravel and can be very hard on vehicles, flat tires are common and car rental is expensive. The distances between our destinations are also very great. Public transportation is very reliable, comfortable and economical. If there is an interest in a Patagonia driving trip we do know of some fantastic hidden seldom traveled circuit's that can be recommend for rental cars that take you to some great places. You would have to make sure that the rental company arranges international insurance so you can cross back and forth between Chile and Argentina. The drive itself would become part of the adventure to get to Futaleufu. However a car is not needed and would be gathering dust as you participate in your adventure in the Futaleufu valley.

Trains of Chile and Argentina: The trains of Chile have declined in service and reinvestment in them has been minimal. We do not recommend them. The trains of Argentina are not known for their service either. They can be fun for train fanatics, with a steam train in Esquel that is a great day excursion. Unfortunately, we do not recommend trains for getting to or from trip destinations.
